All Saints' C of E Primary School - Our Ambitious Curriculum for All

Taking Risks, Encouraging Learning, Achieving Goals, Making Memories.

Curriculum Intent...

At All Saints’ school, everyone is important - that’s all the children and all the adults. It’s a place where everyone is encouraged to be the best that they can be, and a place where they can grow and develop.  As a church school, we celebrate the importance of the Christian faith, which guides us in everything we do.

The Lord says "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you" (Psalm 32 v8). This psalm gives us strength and courage in our convictions as curriculum designers.

Our vision is to encourage learning, inspire curiosity and help grow the future. Be it the next Scientists, Artists, Musicians, Mathematicians, Authors, Sports champions and other professionals who are passionate and skilled and believe in their abilities, we want kind and respectful humans who can better our world.  It is our wish for the children at All Saints’ school to be independent and have high self-esteem so that they can be resilient in life; achieving their goals.  Every child and family who joins our setting will have their own knowledge and experiences to bring to our wider family.  This Cultural Capital, which is a key ingredient to success in life (be it languages, beliefs, traditions, cultural and family heritage, interests, travel and work) will widen children’s experiences, create memories and give power. At All Saints’ we complement our curriculum with many enrichments and experiences, from sporting and academic competitions to residential trips and community events.  We recognise All Saints' is not in a widely diverse area so feel it is important for our children to encounter other world religions and cultures regularly. As such, we carefully consider the books children learn from and also ensure the Religious Education curriculum immerses the children in other faiths through visits to places of worship, special visitors from all faiths, the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award and of course our daily collective worships.

Implementation...

We have constructed an aspirational curriculum (which organically grows and evolves with time) that prepares the children academically, emotionally, socially and spiritually to be active and successful participants in our British and Global society. Children’s voices are heard at All Saints’, (including our Ethos group and Pupil Parliament committee) and they are given life tools enabling them to listen with understanding and empathy, think critically and creatively, question, and speak with clarity. Our children need to be strong and know that they can overcome many obstacles and challenges if they work hard and give it all they’ve got – with integrity, braveness and perseverance - this is courageous determination that drives our values. Above all, we desire for our All Saints’ children to be confident, independent, respectful and happy learners for life!

Impact…

In everything that we do, we strive for greatness, and our ambitious curriculum is no different. To achieve this, we believe it must be informed and shaped by expert subject matter and evidence-informed research. Therefore, our curriculum will never stand still.  Year after year, new experiences and new ways of imparting knowledge, tailored to the individual needs of our context and up to date with the world will be achieved.  Our subject leaders are equipped to design carefully crafted sequences of learning that not only engage and challenge our pupils but progressively build on prior learning, including the explicit teaching of vocabulary across all subjects.

We will see evidence of developed and more secure core skills, which enable successful learning. An increase in curriculum time across all year groups (handwriting, spelling of common exception words, basic sentence punctuation, times tables recall, key mathematical facts and reading skills relevant to age, including early reading, phonics and comprehension skills) will help this impact. Teachers will identify gaps and adapt their plans accordingly.

Knowledge, Retention, Spaced Learning, Instruct, Process, Performance

At All Saints’ we ensure that our curriculum and teaching is informed by the latest evidential research from cognitive science about memory, knowledge retention and practice to help students remember, and apply, the best of what has been thought and said. We make knowledge stick for all learners so that all children are equipped to let their light shine.

Equality

At the heart of our curriculum is complying with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. Therefore, ensuring in line with our Christian vision and values of The All Saints' Way that our Curriculum is accessible for all children including those who may have a disability or Special Educational need.
