Design and Technology
The All Saints’ Way…
Working together as a TEAM
Taking Risks – children who show courageous determination in their learning
Encouraging Learning – children being curious in their learning
Achieving Goals – children having the desire to be the best that they can be
Making Memories – in a school where children are respectful, show kindness and experience joyfulness!
The Lord says "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you" (Psalm 32 v8). This psalm gives us strength and courage in our convictions as curriculum designers.
Design and Technology Curriculum Intent...
At All Saints’, we recognise that a high-quality design and technology education provides the foundations for understanding how the world works. Our pupil’s Design and Technology journey begins in EYFS where the children experiment with tools and materials to create junk models or simple structures. Our EYFS children are encouraged to talk about what the create and how it links with their wider world.
It is our intention to allow all children to exercise their curiosity and creativity through designing and making products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We offer a safe and supportive learning environment where they feel confident and able to take risks and become independent and resourceful individuals for the future.
Implementation...
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression in the form of ‘Projects on a Page. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. All teaching of Design and Technology follows the same cycle: -
- Identify the product, user and purpose
- Investigate, disassemble, test and evaluate existing products
- Practising and learning new skills
- Designing, making and evaluating a product against the design criteria
The design process should be rooted in real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to learning. While making, children should be given choice and a range of tools and resources to choose freely from, where appropriate. To evaluate, children should be able to evaluate their own products against a design criteria. Each of these steps should be rooted in technical knowledge and vocabulary. Design and Technology should be taught to a high standard, where each of the stages should be given equal weight.
The key skills we teach the children are:-
· Sewing and textiles
· Food and nutrition
· Electrical and mechanical components
· Structures
· Using materials
Impact…
We aim to equip our children to develop a passion for designing and creating that enriches their lives now and in the future. The children will have the technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. It is our intention to create a culture where children learn to take risks, have a curious mind, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
