Design and Technology

The All Saints’ Way…
Design and Technology Curriculum Intent...
Discovering God | Learning Together | Achieving Our Best
At All Saints’, we believe that Design and Technology (DT) enables children to discover God’s creativity within themselves and the world around them. Through purposeful, hands-on learning, pupils develop the confidence to imagine, create, and evaluate solutions to real-life problems—reflecting the care, curiosity, and craftsmanship that shape our Christian vision.
Our DT journey begins in EYFS, where children explore materials, experiment with tools, and express ideas through early model-making. These foundational experiences encourage children to talk about what they create and make meaningful connections with the wider world.
As we learn together, pupils are given opportunities to develop their design thinking, solve practical problems, and understand how things work. Our curriculum encourages them to consider the needs, wants, and values of others as well as their own— embedding empathy and purpose in their work.
We provide a safe and supportive environment where children feel confident to take creative risks, build resilience, and grow in independence. Through designing, making, testing, and evaluating, pupils develop both technical knowledge and life skills that prepare them for the future.
In line with our aim of achieving our best, DT at All Saints’ is about much more, innovative creators, and resourceful individuals who can shape a better world.
Implementation...
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children to flourish to become the very best version of themselves they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression in the form of ‘Projects on a Page. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. All teaching of Design and Technology follows the same cycle: -
- Identify the product, user and purpose
- Investigate, disassemble, test and evaluate existing products
- Practising and learning new skills
- Designing, making and evaluating a product against the design criteria
The design process should be rooted in real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to learning. While making, children should be given choice and a range of tools and resources to choose freely from, where appropriate. To evaluate, children should be able to evaluate their own products against a design criteria. Each of these steps should be rooted in technical knowledge and vocabulary. Design and Technology should be taught to a high standard, where each of the stages should be given equal weight.
The key skills we teach the children are:-
· Sewing and textiles
· Food and nutrition
· Electrical and mechanical components
· Structures
· Using materials
Impact…
We aim to equip our children to develop a passion for designing and creating that enriches their lives now and in the future. The children will have the technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. It is our intention to create a culture where children learn to take risks, have a curious mind, become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
