The All Saints’ Way…
Geography Curriculum Intent...
Discovering God | Learning Together | Achieving Our Best
At All Saints’, our geography curriculum is designed to help children discover God’s world—from their local environment to the wider global community. Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils develop a deep respect and curiosity for different cultures, countries, and the natural world.
We encourage children to learn together about a broad range of environmental issues, deepening their understanding of how the world works and how we can care for it responsibly. Our geography lessons nurture courageous advocates who stand against injustice and celebrate the joy of exploring diverse places and peoples.
Situated in a unique setting, we also prioritise teaching British Values within our curriculum, enriching children’s worldview and helping them appreciate their place within both their community and the wider society.
The personal development of every child is the golden thread woven through our geography curriculum—building knowledge, skills, and empathy.
We follow the Kapow scheme of work, structured around four key strands:
- Locational Knowledge
- Place Knowledge
- Human and Physical Geography
- Geographical Skills and Fieldwork
Through these, pupils become confident and inquisitive geographers, empowered to understand and care for the world around them and contribute positively to society.
Implementation...
At All Saints’, the teaching and implementation of the geography curriculum is based on the national curriculum which is used to ensure it is well-structured and focuses on the progression of skills and knowledge. Geography is taught on a termly basis, with an enquiry question which leads the learning and ensures good coverage of knowledge, concepts and skills across the year groups. We believe that high-quality geography includes aspects of geographical enquiry, outdoor learning and fieldwork, map work and environmental geography. These are broken down across the year groups to ensure children are exposed to all these aspects from EYFS all the way to Year 6.
Here at All Saints’, we recognise the importance of teaching geography in a cross-curricular approach, making links to our history curriculum, whilst also ensuring that the children are aware that they are learning geography and are aware of specific skills that make them a great geographer. The topics are chosen to engage, inspire, support and challenge all pupils. This allows children to gain a greater understanding of their learning, alongside the use of retrieval quizzes and games to support learner’s ability to retain information. Children also access a range of enrichment activities to enhance their cultural capital, whether this be through school trips, workshops or field work.
In EYFS, as part of Understanding the World, children learn about their immediate environment within the classroom, as well as looking at and comparing countries around the world. They also have the opportunity to go on weekly welly walks, visits to the local library and church.
Impact…
Through the implementation of our carefully sequenced geography curriculum, the children in our school will become more and more confident in using geographical skills and knowledge as they move through the year groups.
The geography curriculum will ensure that the children are exposed to a wide range of cultures and countries, giving them the skills they need to not only be great geographers, but also individuals who care about their environment and respect those that are different to their own, learning how they can make a difference and become positive contributors to our planet.
