Class Four

Year 4 at All Saints’ sees the children develop their maturity, curiosity and independence. Whether this is in the classroom, our forest school or even a night away from home: the children who finish the year are always more independent, resilient and ready for the challenges of year 5&6.

In the classroom we continue to build and consolidate the learning from previous years. It is a vital year for ensuring those basic skills from KS1 and Year 3 are built upon and developed further.

In maths we ensure those arithmetic methods, such as column addition & subtraction and short multiplication are accurate and rapid. We also introduce a few new ones such as the “bus stop” method. We expand the children’s knowledge of numbers up to 10,000 and they are introduced to decimal numbers. Times tables are a major focus, children who learn them fluently (up to 12x12) will find maths much easier in year 5 and beyond.

English is taught primarily through novels, with writing tasks, grammar and comprehensions linked to these when possible. Spelling continues to be taught within class and set for homework, with additional spelling booster groups for those who need it.

Throughout the year we learn about exciting topics such as…

-Roman Britain, The Anglo Saxons and Ancient Maya

Without a doubt the highlight of the year is our trip to Linnet Clough Scout Camp, followed by a sleepover in the school building! During this trip the children get to hike, take part in exciting activities, roast marshmallows, play games and spend quality time with their friends. They will be returned to their parents very tired indeed!

Here are a few bits of information to help you:

  • Please send in a small, healthy snack with your child. (Ideally not a sugary or chocolate snack) Please remember that this cannot contain nuts or peanuts (including chocolate such at Nutella).
  • P.E. is on a Tuesday and Friday.
  • We love to celebrate good efforts and hard work, so every Friday we will be send out our “Friday Shout Out” on Tapestry.
  • Spellings will be learned on a weekly basis, and tests will be half-termly.
  • Homework is sent out on Fridays and due the following Wednesday.

One of the most vital ways that you can support your child's learning is by reading with them regularly. Discussing what your child is reading will help them secure their comprehension skills and encourage a love of reading.

If you have any questions or concerns, at any time throughout the course of the year, please do not hesitate to speak to us by appointment or for a brief chat on the door.

For families of children already in our school please remember to regularly view Tapestry for our weekly shout outs and much more!
